What is a Sloppy Joe?
When it comes to American comfort food, few dishes can match the popularity and nostalgia of the classic Sloppy Joes. This simple yet delicious sandwich is a staple of lunchboxes, family dinners, and casual gatherings across the country. I remember eating Sloppy Joes on a regular basis when I was a kid.
Sloppy Joe Variations
Over the years, the recipe has evolved and been adapted to suit different tastes and dietary restrictions. Vegetarian and vegan versions, using soy crumbles or lentils instead of beef, have become popular, as have versions with spicy, tangy, or sweet sauces.

Notes
For a quicker version, omit the bacon, onion and garlic, just cook meat and add spices and sauce.
Ingredients
- 10 slices thin cut bacon, diced small
- 1 small sweet onion, diced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1.25 lbs of ground turkey (or beef)
- 1 Tbsp Sauce Goddess BBQ Sweet Heat Rub
- 1/2 cup Sauce Goddess Big & Tangy Black Pepper sauce
- 4 hamburger buns
- 4 Tbsp shredded cheddar or blue cheese crumbles
Instructions
- Cook bacon in a skillet on medium heat for 5 minutes.
- Add diced onions, cook another 3 minutes.
- Add garlic and cook until the onions are translucent and the bacon is very done (almost crispy). This should take around 10 minutes.
- Pour the bacon mixture and fat from the pan onto a paper towel to remove excess fat.
- Place ground meat in the same pan and cook until done. Season the meat with BBQ spice rub if you like it spicy or just use salt and pepper if prefer a milder version.
- Drain any excess fat.
- In the same pan add the bacon mixture to the cooked meat.
- Taste here and add more seasoning if needed.
- Add sauce and warm meat for 5 more minutes.
- Place meat on bun, top with cheese.
