SAUCE GODDESS CONNECTS WITH CAL POLY GRAPHIC COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT FOR LABEL DESIGN

San Diego, CA – Sauce Goddess owner, Jennifer Reynolds, is a graduate of California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, CA and recently held a label redesign competition for one of the design classes.

“Cal Poly’s Graphic Communication Department is second to none in terms of a hands on approach to learning. As a grad of the GrC department several years ago, I know how important industry connections and experiences can be. I thought it would be a good opportunity to give the students a chance to design a live job that will end up on store shelves in the future.” says Reynolds.

The project was born during a discussion with another Cal Poly GrC alum, Patti Mangan of Imagine That located in San Francisco, CA. “We were discussing business ideas and some of the current projects at Cal Poly when Patti said ‘Why don’t you let the students do this for Sauce Goddess. They would love a project like this.’”

Cal Poly’s long time department head, recently retired Harvey Levenson, is a strong supporter of student and industry interaction. This type of partnership was the cornerstone of his 30 year tenure in San Luis Obispo. Ken Macro, the current department chair, plans on pursuing similar opportunities going forward.

Sauce Goddess contacted several professors to find the class with the right fit for this project which ended up being GrC 337, Consumer Packaging in the Design Reprographic Technology Concentration. “Colleen Larkin Twomey, the instructor for this class, was enthusiastic right from the start. She jumped in and had the students researching competitive brands and tasting the product to see if they wanted to offer any copy changes as a result of the flavors.” says Reynolds.

The goal of the project was to re-design the existing label with an updated look and more information for the consumer. The project lasted one quarter, or 10 weeks, during the spring of 2013. Students were given a list of content that couldn’t change and items Sauce Goddess would like to see incorporated into the new look. Work was finished in June. Awards were given based on Reynolds initial opinion of each group’s label design. Final prototype labels were produced and went through a short market research study.

“Although it was not part of the original project, we decided to go ahead and update our entire product line based upon some of the great feedback we received from our market research. Eventually Cal Poly students will influence the look of every jar or shaker of Sauce Goddess sold throughout the country. That’s great for Cal Poly and my company!” alumni Reynolds states proudly.
